Thousands Turn Out to Protest Pending Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

Rally

On May 14, thousands of people attended the Bans Off Our Bodies rally at Union Park co-sponsored by SEIU Illinois State Council. Rallies across the nation are protesting the pending Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. That decision would immediately make abortions illegal in 13 states which have passed trigger laws limiting reproductive freedom for women.

“All people deserve access to abortion care when they need it, on the timeline they choose, and in the community they trust,” said SEIU Local 73 President Dian Palmer.

Abortion has always existed and will continue to exist. It is pivotal healthcare that cannot be denied. It is not in the shadows. Abortion care is healthcare that needs to be accessible, funded, and recognized.

“We are fortunate that Illinois is one of the many states that values women’s health,” said Palmer.

Each of us should be able to live, work, and make decisions about our health and our future with dignity and respect. When people can make decisions about their own reproductive health care, including whether and when to have children, they have more control over their economic security.
