Congratulations to the SEIU Local 73 members at the University of Illinois-Chicago who were presented with the Bolder Worker Justice Award from the Grassroots Collaborative! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care workers at UIC refused to back down to management and went on a 10-day strike demanding better health and safety protocols for COVID-19, fair pay, increased staffing, and an end to outsourcing good union jobs.  The award recognizes the brave struggle led by rank-and-file workers who demanded respect and fairness for their brothers and sisters.

Local 73 Vice President and UIC member Lavitta “Vee” Steward accepted the award on behalf of our union. Watch Lavitta’s acceptance speech below.

Thank you to the Grassroots Collaborative for honoring struggles led by working families in our union and the other unions recognized during the People’s Gala.
