On May 27, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona participated in a roundtable discussion about how to safely reopen schools with SEIU members from around the nation.

“Secretary Cardona is a leader who has a long-demonstrated commitment to partnering with educators, school boards and administrators to promote equity and excellence in education,” said Local 73 President Dian Palmer, who introduced Secretary Cardona.

Secretary Cardona shared how the $170 billion in funding through the American Rescue Plan provides much-needed resources to reopen schools safely for in-person learning in the fall and hire additional staff. Union members asked questions about providing wrap-around services, special education resources, and supporting school resource staff beyond the ARP. Secretary Cardona laid out his vision for how the ARP investment can transform our schools and support SEIU members.

We look forward to working with Secretary Cardona to reopen schools safely for students and workers. Watch the roundtable below.
