Workers Reach Tentative Agreement With UIC Management

After many months of hard bargaining, the Bargaining Committee reached a tentative agreement with UIC Management on a three year contract that provides for across the board salary increases in each year, retroactivity, a bonus and improved contract language for professional workers.

The breakthrough came late yesterday when the university accepted our proposal on changes to Articles 5.4 and 5.8 that open a clearer pathway for the Union to petition the University when pay inequities exist or are created when new hires come in at rates higher than existing employees. This was the main obstacle in us coming to an agreement with the University.

Highlights of the tentative agreement include:

  • First Year: 2% across the board salary adjustment for all SEIU professional members, retroactive to February 26, 2017
  • Second Year: 1% across the board salary adjustment for all SEIU professional members, retroactive to August 16, 2017
  • Third Year: 1% across the board salary adjustment or campus wage (whichever is greater) for all SEIU professional members.
  • $200 signing bonus for all SEIU professional members payable upon ratification.

Improvements to contract language on grievances, market adjustments, new hires and mid-term salary adjustments to address changes in the job market during the term of the agreement, and other gains as well.

A ratification vote by UIC professionals who are Union Members will take place in January. We’ll get details regarding dates, time and places for voting out to you after the holiday, as well as more detailed information on the tentative agreement including a copy of the document itself.

Thank you all for your patience throughout this process. The bargaining committee did not take the financial sacrifices we’ve all made during the protracted negotiations lightly and we truly appreciate your perseverance and participation in the strike votes, membership meetings, rallies, and contract actions.

We look forward to working together to build a stronger organization at UIC so that we can continue to make improvements on the issues that affect professional employees at UIC in the months ahead. We believe that ratifying this agreement is an important step in this process and encourage everyone to join with us in voting yes.
