Waukegan Workers Win Overtime Backpay!

Our local, SEIU Local 73 had started conversations back in September 2024 with Waukegan SD #60 management about certain contract language that was not being implemented. Many of us at Waukegan School District #60 are aware that if you used 8 hours of sick time, then the first 8 hours of overtime you worked that week would be paid at your straight rate of pay. The contract language says, “overtime shall be paid after 8 hours per day or after 40 hours worked per week. For purposes of computing overtime, vacation days, holidays, in accordance with article 10, section 2(funeral leave) of this agreement shall count as time worked.”
What does this mean? Here’s an example: If you work 10 hours on Monday, but use sick time on Tuesday, you will still get 2 hours of overtime pay at time and a half. However, if you then work Saturday, you will only have 34 hours in by Friday so the first 6 hours is straight pay.
In addition, there was a settlement for lost wages or the overtime differential. Instead of going through all the time cards and check stubs from 7/1/23 to now, the district and SEIU Local 73 settled with a number of hours. Every full time employee (sorry, this excludes floaters since they don’t work overtime) as of April 25,2025 will receive approximately 31 hours of pay! This will be on the May 30th check.
Congratulations to Waukegan SD workers for doing a great job enforcing your contract!
