City of Elgin Workers are Ready to Fight for a Fair Contract

The City of Elgin Public Works and Clerical/Technical workers had a wage reopener this year due to pension obligations under the existing contracts. When Elgin leadership offered a 1% pay raise with no retroactive pay, the workers who keep the City of Elgin running saw how little they are valued. Local 73 members fought back and ultimately secured a 3% pay raise with no retro.
“With this wage reopener out of the way, we are looking forward to bargain the whole contract later this year,” said Rich Ciaffarafa, Water Distribution Lead Worker for the Public Works Department.
If anything, the wage reopener has unified the workers to win a fair contract in upcoming negotiations.
“We are looking forward to bargaining for a fair contract this fall,” said Joe Wozny, Steward and Code Compliance Officer for the Clerical/Technical Unit.
Elgin workers are ready to fight for a fair contract that honors the work they do for the city.
