In Memoriam: Sylvia Kizer
With great sadness, I must share the news of the passing of Sylvia Kizer, an Environmental Services Worker at Stroger Hospital. Sylvia dedicated 30 years of service to Cook County and was active in her union as a steward, bargaining committee member, and delegate. She was a leading force in our union during the 2021 strike, delivering passionate speeches about her experiences working during the pandemic’s darkest and most stressful days. Her words motivated us to continue the fight for dignity and respect. Sylvia wasn’t shy about speaking out in front of a crowd or to the press. She spoke with clarity and a vision that elevated her as a leader. She guided us to victory and taught us valuable lessons along the way. Sylvia continued speaking out for the rights of Cook County workers after the strike, testifying in front of the County Board as recently as 2022. She will be missed dearly for her tenacity and spirit. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues, and we will keep her loved ones in our prayers.
