Victory! SEIU Local 73 Wins Grievance for Aviation Worker

SEIU Local 73 has won a grievance for an aviation worker who was denied a third-shift bid.

Lori Simmons, Aviation Security Officer at Midway Airport, wanted to transfer to a third shift position and followed the proper procedures to bid for the new watch. But a month later, as her bid was pending, Simmons noticed employees with less seniority working the third shift. After speaking to her union steward, SEIU Local 73 filed a grievance claiming the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) violated the collective bargaining agreement by not honoring Lori’s years of service. Arbitrator Sonneborn sustained Local 73’s grievance and ordered the CDA to assign Simmons to a third shift consistent with her initial bid.

“I wanted to change shifts to make it easier for me to take care of my family. Without a union, I probably would’ve been stuck on first shift. Going through the grievance procedure showed me how much Local 73 has my back. I’m thankful for my union,” said Simmons
