SEIU Members Gather in Orlando for First-Ever Latino Caucus Conference

Latino Caucus - WordPress

From October 5 through 9, 150+ members and leaders gathered in Orlando, FL, to fight for Latino rights at the first-ever SEIU Latino Caucus Conference. The week was packed with events that guided participants through reflection, analysis and action in organizing Latino communities, particularly with the upcoming the midterm elections. SEIU President Mary Kay Henry delivered a keynote address, and political figures from Florida, including Lieutenant Governor nominee Karla Hernandez-Mats and Congressional nominee Maxwell Alejandro Frost, joined participants in celebrating the history of Latino culture and stressing the importance of the political process within their respective communities.

For those who took part in the conference, the experience strengthened resolve in organizing Latinos. Participants canvassed the Orlando-area, knocking on over 2,000 doors and sharing resources as communities struggle to rebuild from Hurricane Ian. “We had the goal of educating members and the community in their native language on how important it is to vote,” said Venus Roman Valino, SEIU Local 73 Vice President and Midwest Treasurer for the SEIU Latino Caucus. “We’re proud of the work done here in Orlando and are excited to take the message back to our locals.”
