Local 73 Files Grievance Over Failure to Close DMV Worksites During Snowstorm

SEIU Local 73 has filed a grievance regarding the chaos caused during last week’s snow storm when the Secretary of State’s office was indecisive about closing DMV locations. The official website for SoS locations stated they would be closed, and yet, many workers were required to report to work. Many other primary governmental facilities throughout the area were closed.

“Downstate we had icy roads covered by snow resulting in treacherous conditions. It’s shocking that the Illinois Department of Transportation, State Police, and even the Governor told everyone to stay off the roads. And yet our department left some DMV facilities open,” said Michelle Barnhart, public service representative and chief steward.

Several workers who were physically unable to report due to treacherous road conditions were forced to use benefit time to avoid being reprimanded.

SoS workers deserve competent management that prioritizes safety during a storm of this caliber. SoS workers deserve less confusion and more respect. As we take the next steps in this grievance process, it’s important that we stand together in solidarity. Show your support for this grievance and become a member today!
