Village of Dixmoor Violates Union Contract; Lays Off Entire Public Works Department

For years, the workers in the Village of Dixmoor Public Works department have provided a valuable service to the 3,600 village residents. From snow plowing to pothole filling and even dealing with water main breaks, like the one currently impacting residents.

On October 13, Dixmoor officials decided to lay off the entire Public Works department with no notice claiming there wasn’t enough work for the five employees, which is a violation of the collective bargaining agreement with SEIU Local 73.

“We’re deeply concerned Dixmoor residents’ needs are not being met by the public officials who arbitrarily decided to shut down the Public Works department,” said Joe Richert, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 73. “These essential employees have kept Dixmoor functioning throughout the pandemic, and the recent water main break demonstrates how important these workers are to the community.”

Local 73 has filed grievances over the contract violations and is seeking to have all workers restored immediately.
