On April 2 VOTE Toni Preckwinkle for Chicago Mayor
SEIU Local 73, along with SEIU HCII and the Chicago Teachers Union, endorsed Toni Preckwinkle for Mayor of the City of Chicago. The unions stand united in calling for leadership that can put the city on a correct course for working families, making housing in the city more affordable, addressing disparities in healthcare and access to it, creating safer schools and focusing on the criminal justice system.
Why Toni Preckwinkle?
- Toni believes the greatest investment we can make is in our young people. Before she was an alderman, she was a history teacher in Chicago Public Schools.
- Under her leadership, Cook County reduced unnecessary and costly detention of non-violent offenders by more than 30% since she took office.
- She faced the Cook County pension debt head on by raising and allocating the necessary revenue to fund the required payments.
- Toni co-sponsored the Affordable Housing ordinances that resulted in a 50% increase in spending on low and moderate-income housing.
Toni has proven to me that she is a woman who thinks outside of the box. She is matter of fact and stands by what she says.
We have an opportunity to take advantage of an open mayoral election. Chicago has many challenges that are exacerbated by current administration. Toni has a record of facing challenges directly; tough, but fair negotiations; and much needed criminal justice reform. She seeks not just equality of opportunity, but strives for equity.
