My name is Armando Ortiz and I have worked at the Department of Transportation and Highways as a Civil Engineer for over three years. I’m a steward at my workplace, I am part of the bargaining committee and I’m a member of the Political Engagement Committee (PEC) with Local 73. I initially became more involved with my union because I wanted to learn more about the role our union has in our workplace and community. When I first started at my job I knew I was in a union but I felt that I did not have all the tools to make a positive change in my workplace.  Naturally, I started to ask questions. I approached stewards and other coworkers with questions about the union until they finally asked me if I wanted to be involved – of course I said yes. Eventually I attended a steward training where I got to meet other stewards and learned a lot from hearing about their experiences in their workplace.

As I have become more involved in my union, I have gained a broader understanding of how my union works across different workplaces as well as how we work with elected officials to support our workplace and communities that we live in. As a steward, I now know a lot more about the workplace issues that are important to my coworkers as we communicate more effectively with one another. As a member of the bargaining committee, I now know how my employer looks at our workplace and their priorities. And as a member of the Political Engagement Committee I have met political candidates and learned about their outlook. Being a part of union leadership, I have come to realize that our union stands to empower its members through the right to organize and our future depends on working together towards a shared vision.

I have always wanted to be involved in politics and being part of the PEC has helped me better understand the role our union plays with politicians. This has been a really fulfilling experience for me as it has allowed me to take small steps that will help me become a better leader and member of my community. Now when my coworkers ask me questions about the union, I have better answers for them. Even younger members have asked me more questions about their union and now they are more informed. When my parents and friends ask questions about politics, I can now share with them what I have learned in my PEC meetings with candidates and elected officials. Being in all these situations has helped me further develop my professional skill sets.

Mi nombre es Armando Ortiz y he trabajado en el Departamento de Transporte y Carreteras como Ingeniero Civil por más de tres años. Soy delegado en mi lugar de trabajo, soy parte del comité de negociación y soy miembro del Comité de Participación Política (PEC) con Local 73. Inicialmente me involucré más en mi sindicato porque quería saber más sobre el papel que nuestro sindicato tiene en nuestro lugar de trabajo y comunidad. Cuando comencé en mi trabajo supe que estaba en un sindicato, pero sentía que no tenía todas las herramientas para hacer un cambio positivo en mi lugar de trabajo. Naturalmente, comencé a hacer preguntas. Me acerqué a los delegados sindicales y otros compañeros de trabajo con preguntas sobre el sindicato hasta que finalmente me preguntaron si quería participar, por supuesto les dije que sí. Eventualmente asistí a un entrenamiento de delegados donde pude conocer a otros delegados y aprendí mucho al escuchar sobre sus experiencias en su lugar de trabajo.

Mientras que me involucré más en mi sindicato, obtuve una comprensión más amplia de cómo funciona mi sindicato en diferentes lugares de trabajo, y también obtuve conocimiento de cómo trabajamos con funcionarios electos para apoyar nuestro lugar de trabajo y las comunidades en las que vivimos. Como delegado, ahora conozco mucho más sobre los problemas del lugar de trabajo que son importantes para mis compañeros. Como miembro del comité de negociación, ahora sé cómo mi empleador observa nuestro lugar de trabajo y sus prioridades. Y como miembro del PEC, me he reunido con candidatos políticos y he aprendido sobre su punto de vista. Siendo parte del liderazgo sindical, entiendo que nuestro sindicato respalda a sus miembros a través del derecho a organizarse y también entiendo que para avanzar hacia un futuro mejor sólo podemos lograr esto trabajando juntos hacia una visión compartida.

Siempre he querido involucrarme en la política y formar parte del PEC me ha ayudado a comprender mejor el papel que nuestro sindicato juega con los políticos. Esto ha sido una experiencia realmente satisfactoria para mí, ya que me ha permitido tomar pequeños pasos que me ayudarán a convertirme en un mejor líder y miembro de mi comunidad. Ahora, cuando mis compañeros de trabajo me hacen preguntas sobre el sindicato, tengo mejores respuestas para ellos. Incluso los miembros más jóvenes me han hecho más preguntas sobre su sindicato y ahora están más informados. Cuando mis padres y amigos hacen preguntas sobre política, ahora puedo compartir con ellos lo que aprendí en mis reuniones de PEC con candidatos y funcionarios electos. Estar en todas estas situaciones me ha ayudado a desarrollar aún más mis habilidades profesionales.
