Workers at the Regional Mental Health Center (RMHC) Southlake campus will have their voices heard on the job after voting to form their Union.

RMHC United

An overwhelming majority of the 130 behavior health workers at RMHC Southlake, a mental health agency in Northwest Indiana, voted to join the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 73 after a year-long organizing campaign. Job classifications in the Union include Therapist, Nurse, Psychiatric Technician, Social Worker, Care Coordinator, and others.

RMHC provides behavioral health services, primary care, and case management services for Northwest Indiana residents. Facilities include two large mental health centers: Strawhun Center in Merrillville and Stark Center in East Chicago; several group homes outpatient therapy centers, and a newly opened FQHC Primary Care facility.

“We are committed to improving the lives of people with mental illness. We take care of the community and we want to make sure they receive the best possible care,” said Beth Swank, an Outpatient Nurse at Strawhun Center.

The Southlake workers are now united in SEIU Local 73 with workers at the RMHC North (formerly Tri-Cities) campus, who have been apart of Local 73 since 2009. Southlake Union members will now be able to negotiate over issues including safety for both themselves and their clients, more focus on treatment instead of billable hours, and having a voice in random policy changes that limit their ability to provide care.
