A look at the 2010 Census by the numbers

Despite improvements in outreach to immigrant communities, a new report released this week shows that the Census Bureau's outreach has been falling short in at least a dozen major cities, including: Chicago, Dallas, New York, San Jose, Calif., and Seattle.
The report, released Monday by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, also warns that many of these states are on the cusp of gaining or losing U.S. House seats and face a redrawing of legislative boundaries that may tilt the balance of political power.
But there is more at stake in the 2010 Census than just political power. Thanks to CountOnChange.org, here's a quick look at the financial cost of the Census 2000 undercount:

•         $4.1 Billion - states lost because of the 2000 Census undercount
•         $1 Billion - Texas lost because of the 2000 Census undercount
•         $2,913-Each person living in the largest 58 counties in the U.S. lost $2,913 in federal funding due to the 2000 Census undercount.
•         $50.2 Million - the amount of federal funding Atlanta , GA lost because of the undercount in the 2000 Census.
•         8 Percent + -- Persons impacted by the national foreclosure crisis are at greater risk of an undercount in 2010.

That's why we need your help to ensure everyone is counted and all dollars are fairly distributed in 2010!

The Basic Facts on Census 2010
•         The Bureau will mail census forms in mid-March 2010 to all households.
•         The form will take only about 10 minutes to complete.
•         The Bureau will send out bilingual census forms in some areas. (In other areas, families will need to call an 800 number to request translation assistance.)
•         Census takers will follow up with households that do not respond.

So how can you make sure all SEIU members are counted in 2010?

We need your help to distribute flyers, fact sheets, and provide hands-on educational assistance to members. We are following up with many of your locals to get hard commitments and send you materials.     In the meantime, learn more about the campaign here:
