Crossing Guards Insist: Safety and Respect Come First

On Friday, May 31st sixty crossing guards met to discuss their upcoming contract fight. As part of the agenda they talked about their priorities for bargaining and issues of workplace safety. Often overlooked, crossing guards are also hoping to gain further respect from partner offices such as the Office of Emergency Management and Communication, the Chicago Police Department, and the general public. Crossing guards are essential to the overall safety of commuters and pedestrians but much of the general public do not know about the dangers guards face daily. Guards endure verbal harassment and sometimes life threatening accidents due to car collisions.
