Message to All SEIU Local 73 Members at Chicago Public Schools

SEIU Local 73 stands in solidarity with 26,000 public school teachers, clinicians and paraprofessionals who are fighting for a contract with Chicago Public Schools. However, we do have a contract with Chicago Public Schools and we cannot go on a sympathy strike with CTU.  The majority of our members approved a contract with CPS that included a no subcontracting agreement for the life of the agreement along with a “me-too” clause on wages comparable to what is achieved for paraprofessionals.

The message below is for CPS members in regards to CTU contract negotiations and their possible strike Monday, September 10.

The Chicago Teachers Union is calling for a better school day and adequate resources for students, as well as fair compensation for their members and improved job security.  SEIU Local 73 will support CTU if they are forced to strike on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Our members are expected to work at their job if the CTU goes on strike, however we are encouraging our members to wear CTU-produced stickers supporting them in their fight.  Strong public schools are critical for working families in Chicago.  SEIU Local 73 calls on Chicago Public Schools to negotiate fairly and give our students, schools and teachers the resources they need to succeed.

If one of our members chooses not to work on Monday, September 10, 2012, they will not be paid that day.  Use of vacation and sick time will not be permitted except for documented use of sick time with their personal doctor and physician.
