Union Leader: Emanuel ‘Not Telling the Truth’

Union representatives for city traffic aides who are facing imminent layoffs filed a labor grievance Tuesday against Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration.

In the grievance letter, officials for Service Employees International Union Local 73 called on city officials to reverse their decision to lay off full-time traffic-control aides on Aug. 15. Citing the city’s budget crisis, Emanuel aides are eliminating 97 traffic aide positions, with 81 employees losing their jobs and 16 vacant spots being cut from the payroll.

Chicago Tribune:

Laid-off traffic aides hit red light at work

About 80 Chicago traffic control aides who are being laid off will get paid not to work during their last two weeks on the city payroll after Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration put them on administrative leave Tuesday.

The action came a day after the traffic aides union filed a grievance seeking to halt the layoffs, which are set to take effect Aug. 15. Service Employees International Union Local 73 maintains the layoffs violate the city’s contract.
